Actions This Week

MALLIOTAKIS MONDAY
Monday, June 1, 5 – 6 pm 1698 Victory Boulevard
Money for Health Care Not for ICE! Demand that Rep. Nicole Malliotakis vote against a new bill to give LOTS MORE money to ICE and border protection. That vote is happening very soon! We’ll also be demanding that she work instead to restore HUGE health care spending cuts that she voted for as part of Donald Trump’s #OneBigUgly bill — it stole a whopping $1 trillion from Medicaid and safety net hospitals in order to giveaway HUGE tax cuts to billionaires, big corporations, and special interests. Tens of millions of lower income people will now lose their health insurance, and hospitals will become financially strained and some will close.

Whose Family Values? Building a Future for All American Families
Wednesday, June 3, 6 – 7:45 pm
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center
208 W 13th Street, Room 101, NY NY 10011
The American conservative movement has never been closer to advancing its “traditional family values” agenda nationwide. White Christian nationalists at the state and federal levels have worked to restrict abortion access; to allow faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples and religious minorities; and to kneecap efforts towards universal childcare. DE-ICE CITIZENS BANK – JUNE 6 NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
Saturday, June 6, 11am – 1pm NE Corner of 8th Avenue and 14th Street (80 8th Avenue)
Join Manhattan West Side, Chelsea, and Village residents as well as thousands of people across the country on Saturday, June 6th to send Citizens Bank a clear message: financing private prison and immigration detention facility operators The GEO Group and CoreCivic is bad for business. Citizens Bank is a major lender to private prison companies, specifically CoreCivic and The GEO Group. These corporations operate dozens of ICE detention facilities across the United States. More info www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/953075/ This action is supported by Hands Off Downtown West, Chelsea Neighbors United, and Hands Off Greenwich Village.
The “De-ICE” Movement:  While other major US banks have withdrawn from financing the private prison industry, Citizens Bank has continued and even expanded its financial relationships. We need to pressure Citizens Bank that what they are doing is immoral. Check out what is happening to our neighbors. https://www.boycottcitizens.org

JUNE 6, 1944 – D-DAY
Operation Overlord – In the early hours of June 6, under the cover of darkness, American and British paratroopers dropped into Normandy from more than 1,200 aircraft. Once daylight appeared, gliders brought in additional paratroopers. American airborne forces of the 82nd and 101st worked valiantly to achieve their inland objectives, including the capture of Sainte-Mere Eglise and securing key approaches to the Allied beachhead.  (www.dday.org/) Eighty two years later, that nation will mark this solemn anniversary that created a path to victory for the Allies.

TRAINING
Deep Canvassing Training – Date is TBA – How to mobilize Democrats to come out to vote in November. To be presented in coordination with DSA, Young Dems, and SIAC.

On June 14, No Kings and the Committee for the First Amendment are coming together for Rise Up, Sing Out — an uplifting national concert event celebrating the freedoms that belong to all of us: speech, assembly, protest, religion, press, and expression.  Across the country, communities will gather for local watch parties to sing along, make art, share food, connect with neighbors, and take meaningful action together. www.nokings.org

June 14 is Flag Day. It is NOT a celebration of Trump’s birthday. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades, and other patriotic observances. Prior to 1916, many localities and a few states had been celebrating the day for years. Congressional legislation designating that date as the national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949; the legislation also called upon the president to issue a Flag Day proclamation every year. www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/june-14/
